Establish the relationship between speed of sound, its wavelength and frequency. If velocity of sound in air is 340 m sβ1, calculate

(i) wavelength when frequency is 256 Hz.

(ii) frequency when wavelength is 0.85 m

Relationship between Sound speed, wavelength and frequency

Speed = π·ππ π‘ππππ/ ππππ

V = πππ£ππππππ‘β/ ππππ

V = wavelength Γ 1/timeπππ£ππππππ‘βπ₯1 π‘πππ

Frequency = 1/ π‘πππ

V = wavelength Γ frequency

(1) Wavelength = π ππππ/ πππππ’ππππ¦

= 340/ 256

= 1.32 mType equation here.

(2) Frequency = speed / wavelength

= 340/ 0.85

= 400 HZ
