Question 8 Mensuration Exercise 17.4

A wooden article was made by scooping out a hemisphere from each end of a solid cylinder (as shown in the given figure). If the height of the cylinder is 10 cm and its base is of radius 3.5 cm, find the total surface area of the article.

Answer:

Solution:

Here for finding the total surface area of the combination of solids, we need to add the curved surface area of cylinder and two hemispheres .

Given height of the cylinder, h = 10 cm

Radius of the cylinder, r = 3.5 cm

Radius of the hemisphere = 3.5 cm

Total surface area of the article = curved surface area of the cylinder + curved surface area of 2 hemispheres

= 2π rh + 2× 2π r2

= 2π r(h+2r)

= 2×(22/7)×3.5×(10+2×3.5)

= (154/7)×(10+7)

= 22×17

= 374 cm2

Hence the total surface area of the article is 374 cm2. M L Aggarwal - Understanding ICSE Mathematics - Class 10 chapter Mensuration Question 8 Solution image
