NCERT Solutions Class 8 Mathematics Solutions for Exercise 1.2 in Chapter 1 - Rational Numbers

Question 12 Exercise 1.2

Represent these numbers on the number line. (i) \frac{7}{4} (ii) \frac{-5}{6}

Answer:

\text { (i) } \frac{7}{4}

Divide the line between the whole numbers into 4 parts. i.e, divide the line between 0 and 1 to 4 parts, 1 and 2 to 4 parts and so on.

Thus, the rational number 7/4 lies at a distance of 7 points away from 0 towards positive number line.

\text { (ii) } \frac{-5}{6}

Divide the line between the integers into 4 parts. i.e, divide the line between 0 and -1 to 6 parts, -1 and -2 to 6 parts and so on. Here since the numerator is less than the denominator, dividing 0 to -1 into 6 parts is sufficient.

Thus, the rational number −5/6 lies at a distance of 5 points, away from 0, towards negative number line.

Video transcript
"hello students i am rita your math leader tutor and the today's question is represent these numbers on the number line and in the first part we have 7 by 4 it is improper fraction so first of all we break it into mixed fraction that is four ones are four and seven minus four is three is the remainder and three by four so one is to three pi four we can write it as one plus three by four it means when we draw the number line then we draw the number line so this is the number line of the first part and 1 plus 3 by 4 it means this number is between 1 and 2 this number is between so this is our 0 and this is 1 and this is 2 and this one is 0 this is 1 and this is 2 because it is 1 plus 3 by 4 now we have now we have to draw 3 by 4 so we have to make four equal parts now between one and two in the denominator we have to draw three lines one two and three three it means four equal parts the first one is the first one is one by four the second one is two by four and the third one is three by four now in the number line so this is the answer this is 1 is 2 3 5 4. so this is the answer of the first part now we go to the second part in the second part we have a proper fraction that is minus 5 by 6 so it is on the left hand side of the number line first of all we draw a number line and we make it let this one is 0 and this one is minus 1 we name it this is 0 and this one is minus 1 because it is minus 5 by 6 now in denominator we have 6 so we have to make 6 equal parts so we draw 5 lines 1 2 3 4 and 5. we have to make the 5 equal parts now we name it so this one is minus 1 by 6 minus 2 by 6 minus 3 by 6 minus 4 by 6 and this one is minus 5 by 6. now the answer of this question is this one minus 5 by 6 so this is our answer i hope you like this video so please subscribe leto for more updates and to comment your questions thank you"
