A pipe can fill a tank in 12 hours. By mistake, a waste pipe in the bottom is left opened and the tank is filled in 16 hours. If the tank is full, how much time will the waste pipe take to empty it?

Given:

The pipe can fill a tank in = 12 hours

In 1 hour a tank can fill = 1/12 part

By mistake, the pipe can fill a tank in = 16 hours

By mistake, in 1 hour a tank can fill = 1/16 part

A portion of the tank emptied by the waste pipe in 1 hour = 1/12 – 1/16

= (3 - 2)/48

= 1/48

∴ When the tank is full, the time required by the waste pipe to empty the tank in 48 hours.
