Question 12

Q12) How would you prove experimentally that

(a) Carbon dioxide does not support combustion

(b) Is slightly acidic in nature.

Solution:

(a) Carbon dioxide does not support combustion:

A gas jar full of CO_2 is taken and a burning candle is brought in.

The candle extinguishes which proves that CO_2 does not support combustion.

(b) CO_2 is acidic in nature.

To check if CO_2 is acidic or not, a litmus test is conducted.

A blue litmus paper is brought near the mouth of a jar full of carbon dioxide.

It is observed that the colour of litmus paper turns red, signifying carbon dioxide is acidic.
