For the equation: FeCl_3+3NH_4OH→3NH_4Cl+Fe(OH)_3

Answer the following:

  1. Write the word equation for the above molecular equation.
  2. Is the equation given above a balanced equation. Give reasons.
  3. Name the reactants and the products in the above equation.
  4. What is the indication of the arrow between the reactants and the products and of the arrow pointing downwards at the end.

Solution:

  1. Iron (III) Chloride + Ammonium hydroxide → Ammonium Chloride + Iron (III) Hydroxide
  2. Yes, because in this reaction the total number of atoms in reactants are equal to total number of atoms of elements in products.
  3. Reactants - Iron (III) Chloride and Ammonium hydroxide, products - Ammonium Chloride and Iron (III) Hydroxide
  4. The arrow between reactants and products indicates the chemical reaction taking place between reactants. The arrow pointing downwards indicates formation of precipitate.
