Q1) Differentiate between the following pair of terms :

(a) Pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein

(b) Vena cava and aorta

Solution :

(a) Pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein

Pulmonary artery Pulmonary vein
1. This involves the circulation of blood from the heart to the lungs. 1. This involves the circulation of blood from lungs to the heart.
2. It carries deoxygenated blood 2. It carries oxygenated blood.

(b) Vena cava and aorta

Vena cava Aorta
1. It carries deoxygenated blood from the upper and lower parts of the body i.e head and shoulders. 1. It carries oxygenated blood to all parts of the body through its branches.
2. Vena cava is a large vein. 2. Aorta is the large artery.

(c) Platelets and WBC

Platelets WBC
1. .A small colorless disc-shaped cell fragment without a nucleus, found in large numbers in blood and involved in clotting. 1. WBC is colorless and lacks hemoglobin, larger in quantity, and has a distinct oval and lobed nucleus.
2. They play a major role in blood clotting 2. These are part of the immune system which helps the body to protect from germs.
3. Their life span is 3-5 days and it is called thrombocytes 3. Their life span is short i.e 5-20 days.

(d) RBC and WBC

1. RBC or Red blood cells play a vital role in carrying oxygen to different parts of the body. 1. WBC or White blood cells help in the defense mechanism of the body by creating antibodies.
2. They possess hemoglobin which makes them appear red in colour. 2. They are colorless.
