Reproduction in Humans | Long Answer Questions (LA)

Question 2

Practice Question:

What is fertilization? Describe the process in human beings.

Solution:

Fertilization is the process by which male and female gametes are fused together, initiating the development of a new organism. The male gamete or ’sperm’, and the female gamete, ’egg’ or ’ovum’ are specialized sex cells, which fuse together to begin the formation of a zygote during a process called sexual reproduction.

Fertilization takes place in the initial part of the oviduct. When the sperm and egg(ovum) fuse, their fusion is called fertilization. Since it takes place inside the body of the female.it is an internal fertilization. During this process, the nuclei of sperm and egg fuse to form a single nucleus. The resultant single cell, formed after the fertilization, is called zygote. The zygote contains the nuclear part of sperm (from the father) and egg (from the mother). It is for this reason that a child has some characteristics of the father and the mother.
