How Are Schools Responding to COVID-19

E-learning can be the way out.

According to UNESCO, as of April 14, 188 countries around the world have closed schools nationwide, affecting over 1.5 billion learners and representing more than 91 percent of total enrolled learners. Coronavirus or COVID-19 was declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization on 30th January 2020. As the world is fighting COVID-19 a nationwide lockdown was declared on 24th  March 2020. Although the lockdown was declared on 24th March schools were instructed to remain close well before the lockdown was imposed. In the initial stages, parents thought that this lockdown would end soon and schools would reopen and work as scheduled. As the number of cases started increasing the lockdown got more authoritarian. Some states decided to promote their students to the next class while others decided to postpone the examinations. Cancellation of examinations was a much-needed decision to constrain Corona amongst the youth. 

Promoting the students to the next class solved the problem of kids wasting their academic year but there is still a small problem that could affect many students, the students are promoted to the next class without a major part of the syllabus not being taught. This could be a problem for the students to understand some concepts in the next class. To tackle this problem schools started coming out with many different techniques to make sure that learning for a student does not stop.

Steps taken by schools

Schools after the extension of lockdown started taking online lectures on different subjects. Students started getting assignments on a daily basis for different subjects. Teacher’s dialogue with parents on regular bases became paramount, gaining feedback from the parent about the student’s growth and their daily schedule. Students are also provided with e-books and videos as study materials However remote learning became a very important aspect around the globe. In Spite of many measures taken by the school, they proved to be less effective because of some reasons like teachers not being given any training before the online lectures. 

What are parents worried about?

Lockdown has affected the daily schedule of a child, children have also started developing the habit of going to bed late and getting up late. Children are also getting addicted to electronic devices like television, mobiles, or laptops. There has been seen a reduction in the learning time of students. As the schools remain close students are missing out on a lot of important lessons which may be the building blocks for higher classes. It is not only about academics but this long vacation is also hindering the physical growth and health of a child. The weekly physical training classes are no longer possible hence the physical exercise of a child has been narrowed down. The constantly changing schedule of a child is also affecting his/her efficiency in studies. Some students are also getting used to afternoon naps. Parents are highly worried that their little ones are getting lethargic.

What can be done?

Parents are the ones who now have to put in extra effort in their young one’s day to day activity, they need to be their teacher and friend as well. Setting up a daily schedule for your kid is very important and also to make sure that it is being followed. The schedule should include everything like studies, fun time, meals, rest. Daily reading and writing are mandatory for a child, this shall keep him in touch. Equal time for hobbies and fun activities should be given as well. For mental and physical health a good 8-hour sleep is essential. Sometimes your kid might feel alone and lonely, this is the time when parents have to be their child’s best friend.

Subscribing to an e-learning portal could be very useful. These days a student is lacking resources to study from. E-learning gives you all the resources on a click and is full of many live examples which makes it easier for a student to understand any concept and practice as much as they want.

These are some difficult times that we are facing but soon enough this will also phase out, what we must ensure is that learning of a child should never stop in any circumstances. We cannot let the future of India suffer due to this disease.

The Change to Online Learning from Offline

Memory Techniques To Learn Effectively

Hey, do you have trouble remembering dates of historic events, mathematical formulas, or names? They seem to disappear from your mind at crucial times. 

 Do you know our brain only remembers 3-4 strings happening in a day? Then how can you remember all the 10 formulas being taught to you in a class? I have an easy trick for you! Now there is a very simple thing you can do. We tend to only remember instances of events that struck us with a story. So all you have to do is associate each formula or name with a story.

Now suppose there is a Algebraic identity (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2  

‘a’ and ‘b’ are two people happily living in a house. So ‘a’ and ‘b’ are two elders and they have two children ‘ab’. 

Similarly, (a – b)2 = a2 – 2ab + bis when ‘a’ and ‘b’ and sad and hence a negative sign between them, and since they fight even the kids are unhappy and they are  -2ab.

Simple? Isn’t it. Now, this may be a very dumb story. But trust me associating a childhood story or an event will always help you remember the formulas. 

And if you have trouble memorizing the names of scientists or biological names of plants and animals. One way of doing it is by giving them the names of your friends. For eg. Biological name of the potato is Ipomea batata, think of any friend of yours that looks like a potato or any person near you. Now, whenever you see that person or think about him/her in your mind say Ipomea batata

6 steps to Choose the Right Tuition for Your Child

Ways to Improve Mental Maths with Simple Tricks

What if I say, math is nothing like a complicated procedure to get a solution or to solve for X (which by the way most of us think is useless), But instead, Math is a sense we develop from our day to day life. It is just a sense of patterns, the patterns which help us in understanding things. (Even that doesn’t make any sense!) But there is creativity in Math and your mind can use the numbers flexibly. Just like we play with chords to create a song, we can temporarily shift the values of numbers in our head and manipulate numbers (that’s brave!) in different ways to get things done. This ability to do calculations swiftly in your head is called Mental Math. It has its benefits and your mind already has it! Come, let’s learn some tricks of Mental Math and make your friends believe that a genie from a magic lamp solves every Math sum for you!

Compliment the numbers!

The first step is to find a perfect complement for each number. The mathematical complement of a number is the number which when added to it will give numbers like 10, 100 or 1000, etc.

For example – the complement of 4 is 6, the complement of 7 is 3 & complement of 9 is 1. Similarly, the complement of 97 is 3 and complement of 992 is 8. 

These complements are like puzzle pieces which fit into each other perfectly to form a beautiful complete number, which makes calculating in head simple. Let them be on tip of your tongue. 

Addition made easy 

When adding the list of small numbers all you have to do is make a group of complements. 

For example – 6+3+5+7+2+8+4 = [6+4]+[8+2]+[7+3]+5 = 10+10+10+5 = 35

Add two numbers by adding complement to one & subtracting from other  

For example – 49+27 can be written as 50+26 = 76

Similarly, 99+86 can be written as 100+85 = 185

And 995+468 can be written as 1000+463 = 1463

Memorize the doubles of numbers to quickly add them 

For example – 12+13 is just one more than 12+12 = 24+1= 25

Use same addition fact for bigger numbers like 12+13=25 can be used to perform addition 120+130 = 250  

Adding 9 to any number is 1 less than adding 10. This makes it easier to add 

For example – 9+25 can be consider as 1 less than 10+25=35, which is 34

Similarly, 99+483 will be 1 less than 100+483=583, which is 582

Subtraction is the new Addition! 

Now that you know some fastest ways to add numbers in your head, let’s use them to subtract numbers. 

If you have to subtract 7 from 16 stop doing it from right to left. What are complements for? 7+3 = 10 and 10+6 = 16

Adding 3+6 to 7 gives 16 Hence 16-7 = 3+6 = 9

Similarly, 842-67 will be 

          67+3= 70, 70+30= 100, 100+700= 800, 800+42= 842

          That will give 3+30+700+42= 775

This method is useful while calculating change at the shop counter. 

Divide them to multiply! 

Use division strategy to multiply numbers. To multiply 62 by 3 first divide 62×3 as [60×3] + [2×3] = 180+6 = 186

To multiply any number with 5, first multiply the number with 10 and then divide it by 2 

For example – 68×5 will be 68×10 = 680 then 680÷2 = 340

To multiply the number by 4 double it 2 times and for multiplying by 8 double it 4 times 

Multiplying any two digit number with 11 is the simplest trick ever! 

Add both the digits and place their sum in between those two digits to get an answer. 

For example – 54×11 = 5 (4+5) 4 = 594

               71×11 = 7 (7+1) 1 = 781

Split bills faster 

Logic behind dividing numbers quickly is to reduce them in smaller numbers because it is easy to deal with smaller numbers.  

For example – 224÷8 = 112÷4 = 56÷2 = 28

Easy tips & discount  

To calculate a 10% tip at a restaurant you can use a simple trick. Calculating 10% is the same as multiplying by 0.1(Or shift the point one place to left) For example – 10% of 26Rs. = 2.6Rs. And 10% of 380Rs. = 38Rs.

If there is a 20% discount at the store use the same trick and make it double. For example – 20% of 820Rs is double 82Rs. = 164Rs                    

To calculate 15% discount calculate 10% and then add its half to the same. For example – 15% of 640Rs. = 64Rs+32Rs. = 96Rs.                    

Square It!

Once you master the addition and multiplication tricks, you are a few steps away from finding a square of two-digit numbers. Let’s find squares of 64 

steps 1- find squares of both digits separately 6²=36 & 4²=16 write 3616 on one side.

step 2- find a product of both digits, 6×4=24, multiply it by 2 & add 0 after it, that will give another number like 480                                                   

step 3- add both the numbers to get square, 3616+480= 4096

To find a square of a number having 5 at its unit place, write 5²=25 and place the product of the remaining digit with it’s sequential.                           

For example – 75²= [ 7×8 ] 25 = 5625

Can you imagine finding the square root of any perfect square with the help of Mental Math (Pretty easy after this) Well it’s time for you to find out something by yourself and explore different levels of depth of Mental Math (doing 48²+236+84×92+125 in your head!) As I said, Mental Math is not any secret science, it is a sense. It cannot be taught, only be developed by practice in day to day life. 5 reasons why Coding is the skill of the 21st century

India is in the midst of one of the greatest technological transformations of the 21st century. In 2017–18, “Jio has acquired over 100 million users — many connecting to the mobile internet for the first time in their lives. To give some context, this effectively makes Jio that fastest adopted technology in human history” (Nieman Labs). 

Our daily lives, even during this pandemic, are seeing an incredible transformation from just a few years ago. We are able to go on Whatsapp audio calls, or Zoom video calls to keep in touch with family and friends, things which wouldn’t have been possible or even affordable a few years ago. 

Keeping these unprecedented times in mind, here’s 5 reasons why Coding is the most important skill of the 21st century:

Collaborative Learning Vs Solo Learning

Does collaborative learning really work? How often do we wonder whether our child has clearly understood the concept taught in school! Sometimes we even wonder whether our child is a slow learner, whether he is being left out in the class. All these thoughts compel us to think that maybe the teacher is not able to pay individual attention to our child. Maybe it is such a large group that is why he is not able to stay focussed, maybe he feels underconfident amongst all the other bright students who are proactive and keep on answering in the class. This drives us to think that our child requires one-on-one coaching to understand the concepts and we seek out solo classes. But let me ask a question right there; how do we know that this decision is correct, what if we have wrongly assessed the situation as a parent and have been unable to identify the actual problem.

Each child is unique

  Well, let me tell you that the solution to the above situation is toilsome but achievable. Let us begin by understanding the problem. Before that, we need to remember first that every child is different and there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution to this. All thoughts expressed above are indeed thoughts of most of the anxious parents of today but the reasoning may not be true entirely. How do we prove that? Let us consider the first scenario that when our child is not able to perform well in class, we will indulge him in solo learning. Let us compare the advantages or rather the only advantage of solo learning to that of collaborative learning. We think that during solo learning, the child remains focussed and isn’t distracted at all as the teacher has 100% attention is on our child. (Although in the upcoming para, you will understand how untrue this is.)  We also think that the child will understand better. Now, here is where we are making a mistake as a parent. Puzzled, right?

Solo vs collaborative learning

  Let me elaborate this with an example straight from my class. There was a student whom I used to teach. His parents preferred solo learning so the child used to come for 1 hour-long class every alternate day. The classes went on as usual but somehow I could see that the child had a lot more potential. Something was missing, he lacked the drive to answer promptly. His overall performance improved but I wanted him to be more active and prompt in my class. All this was very difficult to convey to the parents but I told them that although their child’s performance is good there is still scope for better. I asked them to agree for collaborative learning and try it out for the next semester that is 3 months. They agreed and to everyone’s surprise, there was a tremendous improvement in his performance in the final semester exams.

Children need a bit of competition

 So what caused the change? The teacher was the same, the teaching method was the same, the student was the same and his understanding of concepts too was the same. The only difference was the number of students in the class.

Here, we need to dive deeper into the child’s psychology. When there were more students, my student knew that his teacher’s attention is getting divided amongst the other students as well. Earlier, his teacher would only ask him questions which he may or may not choose to answer. But now she will ask the student who raises their hand first or who is more prompt.  This incentivised him to be active in a class all the time- The attention of the child improved.

The next very significant development induced by collaborative learning is the sense of healthy competition. When all the students in the class have understood the concept, they want to be the best. This automatically enhances their learning skills. I would say that they get a boost in their self-confidence as well. Although there is a very thin line here which the teacher has to maintain between the students so that no one in the class feels undermined or overpowered by the others. It is the teacher’s sole duty to provide equal opportunity to all the students in the class. Once this is done, the class will run smoothly.

Benefits of collaborative learning

  Another very important factor that solo learning can never provide – but collaborative learning enables without much effort is the power of being creative. When a child hears the answers of the other students, it urges him to think of another solution, to become more creative. Collaborative learning will also teach your child to be patient and wait for his turn, which solo learning has no means to provide. There are children who are always eager to answer all the questions, sometimes they don’t even have the patience to wait for the teacher to complete. But when there is a small group of students, they learn to be more patient and better mannered. We all know that this will help in their mental and psychological growth in the long run.

Despite having listed all the advantages of collaborative learning over solo learning, I know this question must still be bothering us as parents: how can a teacher possibly pay individual attention to my child in a class of 50 students? I had earlier emphasized the point that although collaborative learning is advantageous, the group has to be small. With a small group, it becomes easier for the teacher to pay attention to all the students equally and nobody lags behind. At Lido learning, we lay much emphasis on this concept. Overcoming Math Anxiety

A familiar story

How many times have you or anyone you know heard any of these things?

  1. You’re not good at Math
  2. You’re either born with or without a knack for solving math
  3. Math is something you’re just good at or bad at.

Sounds familiar? Maybe, even irritating?

Well, that’s a classic example of math anxiety in play. There are several reasons why we could be kicking this into motion. Most notable ones being:

  1. For a long time running, intelligence is being measured in direct correlation to how good one is at math
  2. A lot of people who are not good at math unconsciously pass on the anxiety to people who look up to them.

For example:
A teacher tells a student “You’re not good at math”. That causes the child to start becoming anxious. His1 interest lies in the improvement, but then, there is this voice that plays in his head: “You’re not good at math”. This tends to disturb him every time he tries to study math. He opens the book, the voice plays! He’s a child. He does not know how to deal with it!
So, in his interest in not facing the thought head-on, he closes the book.
But, when it is exam time, it’s the same story! Open the book – the voice gets louder even. But he cannot close the book – because, if he does not score a good number, he cannot bear the thought of what would happen with him! He seems to be studying. But he is spending all his energy battling the math anxiety and has less scope for him to focus on Math!
Come to the exam, he would end up making mistakes he otherwise would not have made. Not because he is less intelligent, but because he is extremely anxious! And for someone who looks at his answer paper – including him, “He is not good at math”

Let’s sum up the situation – He is not good at math, because he is anxious about not being good at math, and NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND!

And this trouble is what we call Mathathematics Anxiety

  2. If someone is presumably “bad” at math, how can that person improve?
    (This includes an approach to math in general)

The truth about Math

In grade 7, I personally struggled to understand why 3a+b=3a+3b. It was confusing for me! And frankly, I don’t even remember how I understood the concept later on, but what I do remember is what I did after I felt that way! Instead of shying away from my math book, I thought to myself that I enjoyed numbers, and why should something like this stop me from enjoying myself further? And I opened the book. Chapter – simple equations. It was a bit of a challenge for me initially, but after 4 – 5 questions, I finally found my stride, and within 2 hours, the whole exercise was done! Now, I wasn’t able to do it because I somehow was always magically “good at math”. I did it because, I got a little better in those two hours, thanks to my effort and not giving up! I didn’t suffer from math anxiety. And there began my journey of getting better at math! It was a journey filled with excitement, exploration, and a lot of days where some things just didn’t make sense! But for me, as long as I was determined to fi it out, all went well!
What I want someone to take away from the story is not the fact that I am better at math. This is not to highlight personal glory! What I do want you to takeaway is that – You can get better at math by simply trying!
The truth about math – Nobody is born good at math! One is as good at math as the effort he has put in understanding and practice.

If it is so simple, then how can someone get better at Math?

Here’s an activity – open up your textbook. Choose any concept you’re struggling with – or any chapter where you are struggling to solve the problems. And try these things out!

  • Start with the basics
    A lot of concepts in math is built on something that we already know. Even something that seems new, has its roots in ideas that are familiar to use in some of the other forms
    For example – when we progress from numbers to algebra, we tend to feel overwhelmed! Why do we have to deal with these stupid letters? Why can’t we be happy with the numbers? Do we see the beginnings of math anxiety creeping in? However, if you look at it without these thoughts, what you will see is that the core ideas are based on things you already know!
    You can add numbers – 2 + 3 is 5. Similarly, you can add variables – a + b.
    The problem lies in us trying to understand what the numerical value of this “a+b” thing will be. Instead, if we just treat this as we are adding two numbers, whose value we don’t know, all would be good!
    Any time you don’t know something, it’s always a good idea to kick back to the very basics!
  • Explore the path to the unknown
    Haven’t I mentioned that concepts are built on things we already know? But then, there’s something that we wouldn’t know, and that is exactly what the lesson aims to achieve.
    For instance, if you know integers, then the chapter on rational numbers build on to the concept of what a rational number is using integers.
    If you were to start with integers, how would you end up at rational numbers? Would you just accept that it is of some form, or would you try and understand what is happening?
    The thing with integers – add, subtract, or multiply two integers, we will always get an integer. But when we divide integers, we can no longer say that we will always get an integer. If we don’t get an integer, what do we get?
    Now, if you are able to ask these questions, and ensure that you’re taking it one step at a time, then, you’re exploring the concept. A lot of sources give away information, more than what your textbooks might be giving away, and it’s all easily accessible through the internet now. But when you actually start by asking small, silly questions even, you’ll realize that any concept that could potentially come across is nothing new! It is something you felt like you knew, and now, it has a name to it!

  • Start small – one problem at a time
    Concepts are crucial for understanding math. But then, there still are these standard tests that you’d need to take. And these tests can be a major cause for maths anxiety. These tests usually don’t check how well you were able to establish the concept. But, they want to know how well you can identify what concept to apply in a particular problem
    And that’s why a lot of time is spent on teaching how to solve problems by everyone!
    But, before we know what concept we need to use, there’s still one thing remaining!
    You started with a concept – understanding what you already knew that will establish this concept better. And you had some fun exploring the concept till you reach the unknown! But, how do we put this concept to solve those problems?
    Once you know that you understood a concept, it’s good to open up the small exercises related to the concept. Even the textbook knows you’re beginning to embrace that concept, so they would go easy on those questions. It may seem silly to solve an equation like “x+5 =7” at first, but then, these are the questions that build up your confidence and make you feel like “You can do it”, and you know what? You can!
  • Understand the question
    Okay, now is the time that you face some questions that are a nightmare. And frankly speaking, it’s not going to be easy for anyone to face those questions!
    But then, is it really that hard?
    From experience, I can say this: Each question presents a story, and it is asking you for help! sort of like the question has math anxiety and needs assistance. There is something the question isn’t able to figure out, but it’s reaching out to you to look at it with all the tools that you have learned in math! In other words, the question is helpless, and you have the power to help it!
    How would you help a question which is helpless? You start by understanding what its problem is, and what needs to be sorted out! And that’s half the battle won, right there!
    Break each question down, see what it is asking your help for!
  • Plan it out!
    Okay, now you have broken down the question, understood what it needs, you still need to get there! That’s where you’d learn planning – yet another crucial skill for life
    In any math question, there are somethings that you would know, there are some things you need to find out. And the solution is all about exploring the path to the unknown! Similar to when you were exploring the concept, right?
    Here, too, you would need to explore. But then, you have something in your hand that will help you power through the path – the concepts and the formulae! Each concept presents some relationship where you can find something out. And if you’re lucky, using that concept, you can find out the unknown in the first try itself! Else, it would take you some two or three such concepts for you to establish the link between the known and the unknown, but there is no stopping you.
  • Practice, practice, and more practice: Once you have all these practices in place, you can really be a master of math with loads of practice! The more you practice, the better. Of course, there are other things you would want to do with your time, but then, the old saying is true – the more you do the math, the better you get at it! You need not spend a lot of time in practice because let’s face it, it gets boring after a while. But, having a schedule, and sticking to it works wonders! Maybe one hour a week dedicated just to math?

All in all, there’s nothing stopping you from being awesome at Math! There’s really no need to be nervous or have math anxiety at all! So go out there and break some eggs!

Study hacks during Lockdown

People who have been involved in martial arts or martial studies often experience stress, especially during periods of study, lockdown, or learning. The theory is that students need to learn to face their anxieties in order to become better people. Here are some useful study hacks for the lockdown.

Remain Calm

Most importantly, no matter what your situation, do not become defensive or worried. Students should let anxiety pass by, and if a lockdown is happening, the next best thing to do is to remain calm. No matter what, if you think you are going to lose control, try to relax.

If you are still in lockdown, try to remember your study hacks in lockdown. Although many students are apprehensive, they should do everything possible to remain calm. Being relaxed can help them through the next phase of the lockdown, which is the next part of their studies.

Remember to exercise

The second phase of the lockdown is when students are required to work out the anxiety they were experiencing before the lockdown. In many cases, students need to find new outlets for their energy. Learning how to work out this energy can help them as they attempt to overcome the anxiety they were feeling before the lockdown.

Many people have experienced anxiety in studying, and all of these individuals will benefit from practising the study tips in lockdown that were discussed above. Students must find outlets for their energy, whether it is yoga meditation, tai chi, or anything else that allows them to escape from their busy minds. When these students find ways to release the pent up energy, they are more able to focus on what they are studying.

Don’t lose focus

The third phase of the lockdown is an extension of the studies tips in lockdown that require students to focus on what they are studying. This is an especially important phase of the lockdown because, although students are required to remain focused, the lockdown allows students to become distracted. They are often motivated to study in the lockdown because the boredom and pressures of lockdown can lead to a sense of discouragement.

To combat this, students can practice the study hacks in lockdown that require them to focus on their studies. They should avoid distractions, such as cell phones, television, or even the radio. Simply finding a quiet place in which to work can be a big help in the lockdown.

Avoid stressing out

The last phase of the lockdown is something that students should be prepared for. In many cases, students feel overwhelmed and are likely to panic at any given moment. If students feel any type of anxiety or stress during the lockdown, they should try to remain calm and focus on their Studies.

Why we launched English

When Lido launched in March 2019, it offered only Math and Science to students from English medium schools but we quickly found out that students on the platform were struggling to speak and read English.

Even though we focused only on English medium schools, 60% of our students opted for our courses in Hinglish. For these students with weaker English skills, they did not know how to interpret word problems in Math, or answer questions in Science, so they would just memorize the solution, instead of truly understanding the material. This was one of the key reasons that students “mug” or memorize study material. We realized that offering English was critical to our students to succeed not just in school but also in life. 

So in May 2020, we launched our third subject: English. 

We are the first to offer English online for this young age group in India. There are no coaching classes for English for middle schoolers (Grades 4-8) which is our customer base. Things like Enguru target adult learners, by which time it is much more difficult to pick up English. Only when you start at a young age can you really build this fluency. That being said, we don’t just focus on spoken English for professional settings.
